Under the direction of the Director of Academic Affairs and Head of Summer Colleges (HoSC), the FSY Head Residential Director staffs and maintains the FSY Residential Office and supervises a group of FSY counselors. The FSY Head RD is part of the Summer residential leadership team and is the primary liaison between the Yale Summer Session (YSS) office, the YSS Residential team, and the FSY Residential Life Staff.
The FSY Head RD has primary responsibility for handling student issues in the residential colleges as they develop and to maintain the order and mission of FSY. This entails balancing the competing demands of all the stakeholders, including college administrators, students, counselors, parents, etc., and marshalling the resources of FSY to ensure a successful program for all participants.
Yale Summer Session may adjust the activities and/or responsibilities associated with this position in response to guidance on COVID-19 from state, local, and university authorities. Any changes will not affect compensation for this position. Residential Life Staff are not responsible for enforcing public-health guidelines, although they may serve in an educational function for the FSY community.
1. Manages the FSY Residential Office. Ensures the office is open and accessible throughout the week and during the afternoon on weekends. The FSY Head RD will provide coverage for the office alongside other FSY RDs and can coordinate a coverage schedule for RCs also.
2. Together with the other RDs, facilitates program planning prior to the arrival of FSY Residential Life Staff and FSY students. With the other RDs, organizes orientation and training sessions for FSY Residential Life Staff. The RDs attend a residential staff meeting in Spring, coordinate a pre-FSY arrival information session for students, and may also be asked to participate in a Bulldog Days event for admitted students.
3. Organizes and sets the expectations for counselors, supervises activities and counselor curriculum, and acts as a resource to support counselors.
4. During FSY, serves as a point person during the day for the Head of Summer Colleges and all FSY staff and students with residential issues. Holds office hours where students and Counselors can meet and discuss any issues or concerns.
5. Enforces YSS rules and regulations. Works with YSS staff to make sure appropriate summer program regulations are communicated to counselors.
6. Communicates essential information to the FSY RDs and Counselors. The Head RD and RDs will work with the YSS office staff to oversee social media usage, family newsletter communications, and ensure weekly communications are sent to students with important announcements and information.
7. Helps run FSY staff meetings and attends senior staff meetings. The Head RD and RDs are responsible for planning at least one “bonding” activity for the FSY staff.
8. Collaborates with YSS office staff and YC&E on housing assignments for FSY staff and counselees.
9. Reports facilities issues and requests; follows up with Facilities office when necessary.
10. Participates in community building and keeps lines of communication open.
11. Oversees planning of NYC trip including, but not limited to, Counselor pairing and proposals, approval of trip proposals in collaboration with the Director of Academic Affairs, dinner reservations, ticket purchases and distribution, and scheduling buses. Attends NYC trip and joins one of the groups in their activity.
12. Attends and participates in FSY-wide events such as the alumni event, Outdoor Education Center, and Zip-lining.
13. Conducts themselves in a professional manner, modeling the behavior expected of other staff and students in the college.
14. Takes part in disciplinary meetings with students. Follows up with counselors who are not performing the responsibilities of their jobs.
15. Meets weekly with YSS RDs and Head of Summer Colleges. Meets weekly with YSS and YC&E. Communicates with YC&E and YSS staffs in a timely, efficient, and professional manner.
16. Provides evaluations of all Counselors in the middle and at the end of the program.
17. Follows and enforces Yale College business practices.
18. Leads the set-up of the FSY Residential Office in the college. Creates and maintains a list of FSY inventory throughout the summer. Provides a comprehensive inventory to the YSS Office at the end of the summer.
19. Ensures all university and YSS policies and procedures are followed.
20. May perform other duties as assigned.
Bachelor’s degree (awarded before FSY begins). Previous residential or supervisory experience strongly preferred as is being a past participant of FSY or self-identification with the students who participate in FSY.
The FSY Head RD will be paid a stipend of $7,750 and receive free room and board for the 11 weeks in residence. Please note that the stipend may be contingent on other Yale funding you may be receiving.
It is possible that the FSY Head RD may be invited to take on additional responsibilities prior to May 22 (beyond those outlined above). Such tasks would be eligible for extra compensation and optional where the FSY Head RD can decline them without jeopardizing their summer position.
The RDs may be expected to begin some of the planning work for this position during the months of April and May. The Head RD should report to the YSS 55 Whitney Office at 9am on Tuesday, May 22 to begin training and working.
The FSY Head RD must live in the residential College and must be available to work during the entire 11 weeks, from 9:00am on Wednesday, May 22 through noon on Sunday, August 4, 2024, and must attend an orientation at the start of the summer. The FSY Head RD and the other RDs will spend the time between May 22nd and the arrival of FSY Counselors planning for FSY. While FSY is in session, the FSY Head RD will work 9:00am-5pm, Monday through Friday, and generally has weekends off. However, the FSY Head RD must also attend meetings each week as outlined above in #7 and #15, help with Session A/B move-in and move-out, and participate in the FSY weekend trips and events (e.g. New York trip, Alumni panel). There may be instances where the FSY Head RD needs time off, which can be arranged with the Director of Academic Affairs. The FSY Head RD is expected to participate in the end-of-summer staff event.
The FSY Head RD may not hold other jobs during this time as this role requires a significant time commitment.
Please note that Yale student health insurance coverage ends July 31 for graduated students. This position does not provide extended health benefits beyond July 31.

4. Training and Check-Ins: In coordination with the FSY Head RD and the YSS staff, runs counselor orientation sessions and weekly counselor meetings. The Head RD and RDs are responsible for planning at least one “bonding” activity for the FSY staff. Participates in assigning housing for students.
5. Counselee Assignments: In collaboration with the Director of Academic Affairs, RDs provide assistance with assigning students to housing, placing them in Counselor groups, Slate data entry, Canvas updates, assigning NYC trip groups, various presentations throughout FSY, and other program needs as requested.
6. Shifts: Organizes and oversees Counselor scheduling and changes for social events, buttery shifts, morning rounds, presentation check in shifts, move in and out shifts. Supervises counselors and ensures duties are completed.
7. Move-In/Move-Out: All RDs must be in residence during move-in and move-out periods. RDs will oversee check in and check out for all FSY students during the designated move-in and move-out periods. At the end of the summer, RDs, with the help of the Counselors, inspect student rooms and suites to ensure that garbage is removed, and furniture is intact and collect the students’ keys and turn them into the housing office. RDs will oversee the TR&S drop-off and pick-up, ensure that all loaner laptops are returned to the STC and return p-cards to the YSS office. RDs will have a final meeting after the program concludes with the YSS staff to debrief on the FSY program.
8. Office Hours: RDs are expected to staff the FSY office with regular posted hours during the evenings and weekends. RDs should also determine some office hours that will be utilized to meet with FSY Counselors as needed.
