The FSY program launched in 2013 with a cohort of 33 students. Since then, the program has evolved and grown to an annual cohort of 96, reflecting Yale's strong commitment to its first-generation, low-income (FGLI) student population. As of 2025, nearly 900 students have participated in the FSY Program.

Program Mission
The First-Year Scholars at Yale (FSY) Program aims to empower participating first-generation, low-income (FGLI) students to thrive intellectually, socially, and emotionally at Yale.
The FSY Program is guided by the following program goals:
- To transition students to academic life at Yale.
- To empower students to set and achieve goals that are important to them.
- To foster a sense of belonging and connect students to supportive communities.
- To encourage personal reflection and well-being.
These program goals serve as the guiding principles behind the program's design and related decision-making.
