The FSY program launched in 2013 with a cohort of 33 students. Since then, the program has evolved and grown to an annual cohort of 96, reflecting Yale's strong commitment to its first-generation, low-income (FGLI) student population. As of 2025, nearly 900 students have participated in the FSY Program.

Program Mission and Goals

Program Mission

The First-Year Scholars at Yale (FSY) Program aims to empower participating first-generation, low-income (FGLI) students to thrive intellectually, socially, and emotionally at Yale.

The FSY Program is guided by the following program goals:

  1. To transition students to academic life at Yale.
  2. To empower students to set and achieve goals that are important to them.
  3. To foster a sense of belonging and connect students to supportive communities.
  4. To encourage personal reflection and well-being.

These program goals serve as the guiding principles behind the program's design and related decision-making.
